The bus

So I’ve been taking the bus for a few months now, since moving to my new crib. I dig it for the most part. Yeah I like that it’s eco-responsible or whatever, but mainly I just like having a guaranteed 1.5 hours per day to read. It’s something that I used to do a lot, and until very recently I just kind of let slip. I mostly blame my xbox 360 for that, because when I have spare time I’m usually on that damn thing.

So the bus is great for solving that problem. Yesterday I noticed that the dude in the seat next to me was reading a magazine with an article titled something like, “Why Evolution Doesn’t Exist”, and I about pissed myself trying to hold back laughter. No, not because I worship in the house that Darwin built (well, I do, but that’s beside the point). It was actually because here I was, at that very moment reading a book on Dinosaur/Avian evolution. No joke. The page I was on even had the most perfect diagram of Thereopod to Aves skeletons layed out, highlighting the very bones that so obviously show the progression from dinos to birds.

I’m not trying to make any judgments about the dude, for all I know he’s reading the article for a good time. People are allowed to believe what they want, just as long as they don’t try to tell me they’re absolutely right. I’ve mostly given up on the idea that people are all deep down capable of being truely rational and thoughtful. I think that, just like anything else, there is variability in that particular trait, and some people are on the low end of the scale. Sure culture has some say in that, maybe growing up in a religious environment even encourages that trait and even drags some of the middle-ground thinkers to the low end. I mean, where else are you taught so repeatedly to really forgo logic and accept something based on “faith”? That’s got to lower your overall ability to think logically right? How could it not?

Anyway, the point is not that religion is bad or something. The point is, we’re all stuck on the same bus, going to a similar destination.
